A game proceeds with the Jefferson Memorial in the background. I don't like
the stance of this batter - you should never have your wrists over your
head. There is lots of air traffic overhead (notice the jet in this shot?).
We even saw several helicopters after dark.

This stirring panorama of the U.S. Capitol building on Capitol Hill is taken
in front of the Washington Memorial.

I backed up a little and retook the picture to show that the
U.S. flags are flying at half staff to honor
Representative Floyd Spence
of South Carolina who died on
August 16, 2001

To our right is the older, more recognizable "Castle" building
of the Smithsonian.
We are going to leave the Washington Monument as night falls and
walk around the Tidal Basin and see the other monuments after
nightfall. You can see the route on this map - find the Washington
Monument and then look for the Jefferson Memorial at the very
bottom of the Tidal Basin. Then look for the Korean Memorial
and the Lincoln Memorial. This map does not show the Franklin
Roosevelt Memorial, but it's there now too, before the Korean.

Here are the last stab of sunlight speeding us on our way.

Here is the view of the Jefferson Memorial. Look at the rush hour
traffic in the foreground. As a gawking tourist, you have to be very
mindful of the traffic, or you or your kids could be seriously hurt.
We are making this long walk with a 7 year old, who by now is very tired.
I am carrying him on my back to the Jefferson, and my step-daughter will carry
him piggyback almost the whole rest of the way. This is a long walk,
but if you are in reasonable shape, it is well worth it!

A closer picture. Yes, bicyclists are everywhere.
