2aa.jpg I put the camera under the plant and took this shot with the lens facing the sky.

2ab.jpg This photograph is from the west ditch at the south end of the road. Looks a bit like darkthroat shootingstar (Dodecatheon pulchellum), but Darkthroat shootingstar's eastern range ends in the Dakota's, well over three hundred miles away. So what is this? The clues are 1) It's a vine and 2) it has small green tomato-like berries (below). It's wild tomato! (Solanum quadiloculatum).

I am used to commercial tomatoes that have yellow blossoms. Look how each flower in sequence forms a tomato. Had I known what this was at the time I would have come back to pick a few ... Return to Flora     Return to Consumables

This is a Thread-Waisted Wasp, solitary (nonsocial) wasp in the species Ammophila. It lives in open areas throughout the U.S. and Southern Canada. Adults feed on nectar while the larvae eat hairless caterpillars, insects, and spiders. Females dig a short burrow in sand or light soil, enlarge a chamber to receive immobilized prey, and lay an egg. Larva emerge from the egg and feed on the host, devoring it over time thus killing it in a most gruesome manner.

Canada hawkweed or Kalm's hawkweed (Hieracium kalmii L.) is a native plant. The Roman naturalist Pliny believed that hawks fed on plants in this family to strengthen their eyesight. The Romans also believed in ritual suicide and that several of their emperors were living gods. Return to Flora

Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis). I believe this is the right identification because of the spread out nature of the blooms. This plant is native. Return to Flora

Alfalfa blossom.

2ai.jpg 2aj.jpg 2ar.jpg The terra forming has now completely taken out the old berm opposite Twin Oaks. Young plum trees, blackberry bushes, and a variety of flowers have been taken out. Looks like I began chronicaling the demise of the road at the right time.

I am walking west along Right Angle Tree Line back to the road. It's a tad bit early for school to start, but here is a bus out running a route for some reason. It's still dry as evidenced by the dust raised by the bus.

2an.jpg 2ao.jpg 2ap.jpg Just some panoramas from south of the two farms.

Another red clover bloom.

I am out after sundown and the nearly full moon has come up.
