Sunday, August 19, 2001. We took a bus from our hotel in Jersey to the NY transit authority bus terminal. It took us about forty five minutes. We went out the door and up a block and found ourselves in Times Square. Times Square is a bustle of activity. It doesn't help that construction has narrowed some of the sidewalks. We saw lots of police officers and lots and lots of tourists. |
I tried to get a a shot further down the street. |
We were treated to such sights as the Naked Cowboy, a man dressed only in cowboy boots, a cowboy hat, and underwear. I think his gig was to charge to have your picture taken with him.

Here we are riding the subway on the way to Battery Park. This must be the "don't even think of taking my camera" look I flash to fellow subway riders.
We passed a TV news crew while we were by the Times Square subway entrance. It seems a man had been killed in the wee hours of the morning the day we visited the city. Here is the news article. We felt safe here, I am not suggesting that it's not safe. But you should always be wary in any big city and not get off alone somewhere. |

Youth Is Fatally Slashed in Times Square SubwayFrom the New York Times Appearing Monday August 20, 2001 By C.J. CmVERS An 18-year-old man died early yesterday after a man who tried to rob him slashed his neck at a Times Square subway station, the police said. The victim, Michael Bishop of Howard Avenue in Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. at St. Vincent's Manhattan Hospital, a little more than an hour after he was cut with a box cutter near the subway turnstile at West 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue. The police said that Mr. Bishop had been attacked by a man who had tried to snatch a chain he was wearing around his neck. Mr. Bishop's cousin, Terrance Bishop, who was also slashed, chased the attacker from the subway station to the street. The cousin's injuries were not serious, the police said. The police arrested a suspect, Alexander Paisley, 35, of 722 Van Siclen Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn, within a block of the station. Sgt. James Foley, a police spokesman, said the box cutter was recovered after the chase. Mr. Paisley, who the authorities said had a criminal record dating back to a 1982 robbery arrest and had spent much of his adult life in prison, was charged with murder and held yesterday for a court appearance today. The authorities said he had been charged with murder once before, in 1990, and had also been convicted of robbery and assault for crimes he had committed while in prison. Michael Bishop's friends and family declined to comment publicly yesterday. A memorial of lighted candles was erected near his home. |
