Here is my picture of crashing ocean surf. Margaret walked along the
beach early each morning, and this was one of the mornings I joined her.
The beach at Barcelo Maya proper was sandy, but when you left the
grounds it became very rocky. The sun was often hidden until it rose
sufficiently high in the sky.

|
The weather here was often hazy. It was somewhat cool along the water this time
of day, but quickly warmed up. This was the time of day of the least
humidity. The vehicle tracks in the sand are made by a tractor the resort
sent along the beach to clean it of debris.

This picture was taken late in the afternoon a different day than the
previous pictures. You can tell by the shadows. This is taken at
the beach water sport building. The view is down
the beach toward the resort. Note the big water bike in the foreground.
|
|
In the foreground is a kayak. In the distance is parasailing. The
kayaks were free to use for a half an hour at a time. You signed up for
them at the beach water sport building. You had to pay to parasail.
|
|
The water bikes were very popular. Like anything else, initially
getting from the beach into the water was the hardest part. Once
underway, it did not
seem to take much power to operate them. Note the haziness of the
horizon.

This is the view of the main beach. It seemed to have enough capacity for
many thousands. There was some topless sunbathing, but not enough to
have to keep you children away.

Warned about the difficulty getting snorkeling equipment at the resort,
I bought two sets and brought them along. Here Alec snorkels by the
resorts' dock. He did very well - no one else in our family managed
to find the knack. In the background is the scuba diving, snorkeling and jet
sky building. People paid to go scuba diving and practiced in the
resorts pool. People also paid to be taken out to a reef for better
snorkeling. We just snorkeled by the dock.

|
Our kids on the steps leading from the dock to the water. Those
steps were very slick ...

A small school of silver fish made the dock area their home. We brought
bread from the dining hall and threw it in the water right by the
kids. This would bring the fish close enough for the kids to try
and touch them. Alec especially liked to grab at the fish.

You can see how windy it is and, again, how hazy it is. I only saw the
jet skis rented out once. The people have to be careful where they
ride it so they don't smack into the barely submerged reef. In front of the
water sport building is a mast that the flags showing the weather
warning flags are shown.
