After arriving at my cousin's in Munich and spending the night we drove from
Munich to Bogen in order
to visit the family farm. We passed the giant BMW plant along the way.
My grandfather worked and grew up on this farm. Frieda, her
sisters Agnes and Claudia, and her brother Wasti did too.
Eight (?) generations have lived on this farm.
Wasti farms the land now.
They grow
lots of sugar beets - with the record temperature this summer the beets are
stressed. They also grow corn and wheat. Return to Bavaria '07 |
This area is just north of the Danube. It is the beginning of the Bavarian forest and is in the foothills of the Bayrischer Wald mountains. It is incredibly beautiful. |
Here is the corn crop. Here are my 2nd cousins - Frieda and Agnes. Frieda's English is very good. She holds a device that you type German words into and it displays the English equivalent. While we were standing here Agnes made us a small doll out of cornstalk like the ones she used to make here as a child. |
Now we are walking back toward the farmhouse and buildings. The roof is that of the farmhouse. This field used to have wheat growing in it. |
Here is the view that greets you from the back door of the house. Notice that for mid-August the countryside is very brown. There is a major drought going on. |
Here is Margaret at the back of the farmhouse. Usually multiple generations lived in the house, as is the case now. This farm house was built in 1902. But it has been added on to and it's appearance has changed several times since it was originally built . |
The building at the right is now a garage, but used to be a chicken coop. In the background you can see the new house of Frieda's nephew. |
Here I am with Frieda and Agnes and their parents. |
This is the view of the farmhouse from the side. To the right of the house is what used to be the attached barn. When my parents first visited animals were kept here. There are no more cows or pigs or chickens. To the right of the attached barn is where the farm implements and sugar beet trucks are stored. Frieda's twin brother now works the farm and the suger beet cooperative he helps run stores the trucks on this farm. This storage area had to be rebuilt after high winds knocked down the previous one. Wasti's son Michael and Michael's wife also live on the farm in a new house they are almost finished building. |
Frieda sent me this picture of the farm and the chapel taken in the 1950's. The next web page tell's all about the chapel. |
Margaret and I pose with Frieda and her parents.
